Creating A Study#
Getting Started#
Navigate to “Studies” in the side navbar
Click on “Create Study”
Enter a name for your study
Associating Data Sources#
You can enhance your study by connecting it with external data:
Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
Google Sheets
Tip
We provide template sheets for both experimental and computational studies to help you get started.
Study Types#
Materials Commons supports two primary types of studies:
Experimental Studies#
Focuses on physical samples
Includes experimental metadata
Tracks sample preparations and measurements
Computational Studies#
Handles simulation data
Tracks computational parameters
Manages calculation results
Note
We recommend starting with one of our template sheets to understand how Materials Commons organizes:
Sample data
Computational results
Associated metadata

Quick Start Guides & Templates
We provide ready-to-use guides and template sheets to help you get started:
- Experimental Studies
Includes template sheets for managing multiple samples and their metadata
- Computational Studies
Includes template sheets for tracking computational results
Each guide comes with example Google Sheets that you can:
Copy as templates for your own studies
Load directly into Materials Commons to explore the features
Use as reference for structuring your data
